5 Tips for Your Indy 500 Visit

The Indy 500 is the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and an annual tradition for race fans and many Hoosiers. This year is certainly no exception. As the Indy 500 celebrates its 100th running, there’s even more reason to join in the festivities. To make the most of this year’s celebration, check out our top 5 tips for your Indy 500 visit.

1. Stay Downtown After the Parade

The IPL Festival 500 Parade in downtown Indianapolis is a must-see. Don’t miss out on this extravagant parade complete with giant floats and the 33 starting drivers for this year’s race. But after the parade, don’t rush home. Indianapolis has made some big changes since hosting the Super Bowl and there’s plenty to see and do. Head over to Mass Ave for local restaurants and unique shopping opportunities. Grab lunch or make dinner reservations for your whole party and make a day out of your visit downtown.

2. Take the Shuttle to the Track

It is pretty disheartening to be stuck in traffic driving 1.5 MPH after witnessing race cars top out at speeds well over 200 MPH. If you’re planning on taking your own car to the track, it’s not the drive in that is the trouble, it is the drive out. Save yourself the hassle by taking the shuttle instead. By the end of your day at the track, the last thing you’ll want to worry about is being trapped in a large crowd of people all trying to leave at the same time. You can see the various shuttle stops and buy tickets here.

3. Pack for the Heat

Memorial Day weekend marks the start of summer and usually brings in some hot weather. This year looks like its no exception. Besides temperatures in the upper 80s, there’s little shade to be found at the track and lots of people packed together. Make sure you pack plenty of bottles of water. Beer is easy to buy, but the lines for water can be very long. Also, just like a day on the lake, don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat and shades. You’ll be outside all day long.

4. Check Your Cooler

It’s a good idea to bring a cooler with drinks and lunch for yourself and guests. The Speedway allows you to bring in your own food and drink, but make sure your cooler fits their restrictions. Coolers can be hard or soft, but may not be larger than 18”x 14”x 14”. And if you’re planning on packing your own adult beverages, make sure they are not in glass bottles. Opt for cans instead. Visit www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com for more information on what items are permitted and what aren’t.

5. Wear Proper Footwear

Last, but not least, make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Flip flops are great for a day out on the boat, but do not plan on wearing them to the race. Your feet will get very dirty and maybe even stepped on with the heavy crowds. Additionally, you’ll be surprised with the amount of walking you will do. Make sure your shoes can handle the work.

Follow these tips and you’ll be sure to make your Indy 500 an enjoyable, memorable experience!
