When building a custom home, there are tons of options to consider, but it all starts with choosing the right builder. Here are some ways to help you pick the perfect builder for your custom home on the lake:

1. Ask experts: Many realtors have connections in the custom homebuilding community and may be able to offer suggestions. Additionally, for our communities, we have many connections and would be glad to help you out with recommendations – just shoot us an email!
2. Ask customers: Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few custom home builders, check out their websites – they often have lists of communities they’ve built. From there, simply ask their past customers how they like their home and the building experience.
3. Ask your (new) neighbors: As earlier mentioned, oftentimes builders build multiple homes in a community. One way to start the transition to a new neighborhood and meet neighbors (while gaining valuable insight) is to talk to them about their experiences with their builders.

Look for Quality Attributes

A quality custom home builder will also display many of the following attributes. Make sure their style (both visually and how they work) fits with yours. Be sure to ask about:

• A current list of projects they’ve completed, along with specifics about projects of similar scale to yours and references.
• Communication: How they communicate and how often. For an unbiased opinion, ask a past client of theirs.
• Organization: This ties in with communication, but the builder needs to have good organizational skills in both their work and in their ability to communicate the project with you.
• Work flow: Along with the above, the ability for the builder to describe and communicate their work flow with you is crucial: What information do they need from you and when? What’s the next step in the process? How often will you hear from them? Having these processes nailed down and being able to communicate them will give you peace of mind and save a lot of headaches.
